  • 1 tbsp baking powder

  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp granulated sugar, for sprinkling on top
  • 1/2 cup cold butter (or vegan butter)
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup milk (any kind)
  • 1 tsp milk for top
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for icing)
  • 2 tbsp melted butter (or vegan butter)
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • ½ tsp pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, spices, salt, and sugar.
  3. Cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles small peas.
  4. Add milk and molasses; stir until just combined.
  5. Shape the dough into a circle on a parchment-lined baking sheet, about 3/4" thick.
  6. Brush with milk and sprinkle with sugar.
  7. Cut into wedges and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  8. If desired, prepare icing by whisking powdered sugar, melted butter, maple syrup, and vanilla extract together.
  9. Drizzle icing over warm scones before serving.
