  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1/2 cup white apple vinegar (optional)
  • 1/2 cup vegetable or chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 12 ounces pasta (fettuccine or spaghetti)
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)
  • Fresh parsley (chopped, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Cook pasta in salted boiling water until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a skillet, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add onions, sugar, and salt; cook for 25-30 minutes until caramelized.
  3. Stir in minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.
  4. If using, deglaze the pan with white apple vinegar and let simmer until mostly evaporated.
  5. Add broth and heavy cream; stir and simmer for about 5 minutes.
  6. Mix in grated Parmesan cheese until melted. Season with salt and pepper.
  7. Combine cooked pasta with the sauce in the skillet.
  8. Serve garnished with chopped parsley and additional cheese if desired.
