Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1½ cups cold unsalted butter (cubed)
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup ice water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 6 to 7 cups sliced apples (peeled and cored)
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

Instructions

  1. Make the crust by whisking together flour, granulated sugar, and salt in a bowl. Cut in cold butter until crumbly. Mix eggs, ice water, and lemon juice in another bowl; combine with flour mixture until dough forms.
  2. Chill the dough for 30 minutes, then prepare the apple filling by tossing sliced apples with sugars, cornstarch, spices, lemon juice, and vanilla.
  3. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out the larger dough piece to fit a greased baking sheet; fill with apple mixture. Cover with remaining dough, venting the top.
  4. Bake for 45-50 minutes until golden brown. Cool completely before glazing with powdered sugar mixed with milk and melted butter.
