  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 large apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted or softened

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, cream together unsalted butter, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt. Gradually add all-purpose flour and mix until combined.
  3. Press the mixture evenly into the bottom of a greased 9×9 inch baking pan.
  4. In another bowl, combine sliced apples with all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg; toss well to coat.
  5. Layer the apple mixture over the shortbread base.
  6. Mix remaining flour with brown sugar and melted butter; sprinkle over the apple layer.
  7. Bake for 45 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
  8. Allow cooling completely before slicing into squares.
